Or2: A Revolutionary Photochromic Canopy Structure

Francesco Brenta, Christoph Klemmt, and Laura Micalizzi's Award-Winning Design

Or2, a unique photochromic canopy structure, is the brainchild of designers Francesco Brenta, Christoph Klemmt, and Laura Micalizzi. This innovative design, which reacts to sunlight, won the prestigious Platinum A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2013.

The inspiration behind Or2 lies in the potential of smart materials like photochromic ink, previously used only for UV-reactive sunglasses or packaging. The designers recognized the potential of these materials for environmental control and energy saving, especially on a large scale. The shape of Or2, a self-supporting single surface structure, was inspired by the internal geometries of seasquirts. The shingle pattern forms the structural system while creating a rain-sheltered space beneath.

What sets Or2 apart is its interactive nature. The polygonal segments of the surface react to ultra-violet light, mapping the position and intensity of solar rays. When in the shade, the segments are translucent white. However, when hit by sunlight, they become coloured, flooding the space below with different hues of light. During the day, Or2 becomes a shading device passively controlling the space below it. At night, it transforms into an enormous chandelier, disseminating light collected by integrated photovoltaic cells during the day into the surrounding areas.

The realization of Or2 involved the development of special software components to create the shapes and generate the cutting schedules. The individual elements were then automatically numbered and water jet cut. This marked the first use of photo-reactive technology at an architectural scale, exploring its applicability to construction and design. The beauty of Or2 lies in its constant interaction with the elements, making its appearance unique at each moment of the day.

The operation of Or2 is entirely passive, requiring no human interaction. The photochromic ink reacts depending on the amount of UV light hitting the material, and the colour of the surface changes accordingly. Constructed for the London Architecture Festival, Or2 was exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute, Belgrave Square, London.

The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing. Awarded to the defining aesthetics of an era, they advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, exhibiting transcendent excellence and making the world a better place. The award-winning Or2 is a testament to the creativity and innovation of its designers, Francesco Brenta, Christoph Klemmt, and Laura Micalizzi.
